The misunderstanding of differences, more often than not is the primary cause that pushes us apart and isolates us from exploring this vast world and meeting interesting new people. As the ubuntu saying goes “I am who I am because of who you all are”. I believe that differences can serve us far more than they are misused to push us apart.
The differences you make in the people’s lives that you meet will resonate from person to person for many years to come. For instance if you commit an act of kindness to someone in their moment of need – that in turn will have a knock on effect on their mood and how they go about their day, which in turn will have a positive effect on the people he/she comes into contact with and so on. Similarly, any unkind or negative action that you make will have the same domino effect whether you intended for that to happen or not. Some might call this Karma, while others may refer to it as cause and effect.
We all know the saying “What goes around, comes around”. But did you know “an eye for an eye” makes the whole world blind?
Whether you realise this or not – we all treat each other how we ourselves get treated by others – this is unfortunate because if we are treated badly enough to be affected – we will pass on this negative Karma by venting our frustration on those we come into contact with.
Karma is a double edge sword, in that it doesn’t care whether you do good or bad, it’ll pass on the energy to everyone around you. I call this the chains of Karma and I feel it’s time we broke those chains or at least put them to better use!
Let me clarify; I don’t mean that we should all stop doing acts of kindness! I encourage anyone and everyone of all ages to actively do at least one good deed a day. No matter how you are mistreated, don’t allow the chains of Karma to drag you into a negative state that will in turn have an effect on those you come into contact with. Remember, you don’t have to say or do anything negative to anyone in order for the energy to be passed on. Simply being affected and harbouring those negative emotions whilst in the presence of others is enough to pass on the negativity. We are all intrinsically connected to each other and our world – we are one.
Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask yourself “Do I want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future?”
The quote above has immense meaning to me while writing this article – and I’m sure if a hundred people read it they would likely all interpret it differently. To me this quote means changing the way you think and react to any given situation – good or bad. In a good situation we all automatically react with good intentions/emotions, in a bad situation the immediate response is to react negatively. You cannot fight fire with fire. Love conquers all!
What I propose is this… Let’s recreate Karma… Let’s make it something that only spreads good vibes and good consequences even if someone has wronged you. If you’re on the receiving end of someone else’s negative actions, whether you feel you deserve it or not, turn it around. It will take some practice at first, but once you get into the habit of meeting negativity with positivity, something wonderful transpires – balance! By asking yourself in every situation, good or bad “How can I use this and make a positive difference?” – you’ll train yourself to respond with positive energy and neutralise the negative Karma, stopping it from spreading like a disease.
Sound good? I hope so! Cause only you and I can make a difference through our thoughts and actions.
It’s not what happens that counts, but what you and I do with what happens that makes the difference.
Get into the habit of doing one good deed daily – no matter how small. By the time a year is up you’ll have created 365 points of positive Karma that will work their way around the world for everyone to enjoy.
Examples of good deeds:
- Giving up your seat for someone on the bus or train
- Holding the door open for someone even if they’re a bit further behind you
- Letting another person go through a door before you regardless of age or sex
- Helping an elderly neighbour do their shopping
- Helping someone in need cross a busy street safely
- Helping someone carry their luggage/shopping/whatever
- Giving every living creature you meet a smile
- Asking a work colleague, or the checkout person at your supermarket how they are
The list really is endless, if you have any methods of sharing kindness and happiness – please do share with us so that we in turn can share with the rest of the world. After all we are all part of the same family – the human race – let us all try to make a good difference in each other’s lives regardless of our differences. After all, our differences are what make us special. These differences fit together perfectly like a puzzle to create a wonderful world of discovery and adventure.
